Brand Development + Stewardship

Belco has served adults with developmental disabilities in the Ohio Valley for more than 50 years, creating jobs, eliminating barriers, and building community. When a long-tenured CEO prepared to retire and new leadership stepped in, Belco partnered with TrailBlaze Creative to evolve its brand in a way that honored decades of community trust while building a clear, confident platform for what comes next.

From a church basement more than five decades ago to modern industrial facilities serving the tri-state area, Belco’s mission has always been the same: provide meaningful employment and a true sense of community for adults with developmental disabilities. Over time, that mission expanded into packaging, assembly, and document destruction services, positioning Belco at the intersection of human services and professional business solutions.

But as the organization grew, the brand hadn’t kept pace. The logo felt dated. Messaging didn’t reflect the full scope of the work. And internally, Belco was navigating one of its most significant transitions: a retiring CEO and incoming leadership with a desire to modernize the brand. They needed a brand partner who could hold the complexity of that moment with strategy and care. TrailBlaze Creative stepped in with a human-centered brand mapping process built for exactly this kind of work.

The rebrand unfolded over nine months, deliberately and in step with the leadership transition. TrailBlaze began with stakeholder focus groups, then moved into deeper conversations across the organization. Leadership, board members, and program managers were all part of the process. The guiding question throughout: How do we help Belco move forward without leaving anyone behind?

Before a single concept was designed, a clear throughline emerged: Belco has always been about choice, dignity, and opportunity. What had changed over the years wasn’t the mission; it was the scope. The organization had grown into something multifaceted and expansive, but its messaging hadn’t evolved in kind. That clarity shaped everything that followed.

TrailBlaze helped Belco develop an authentic narrative rooted in lived experience, proven outcomes, and decades of community leadership. From that foundation came a new master brand architecture, a verbal identity that speaks with warmth, confidence, and respect, and human-centered messaging that positions Belco as a trusted leader in inclusion and employment.

The new master logo features a bold navy wordmark paired with a modern sans-serif typeface, conveying trust, stability, and approachability. A multicolored star symbol constructed from five directional arrows serves as a core brand element, representing mobility, community, and individuals moving forward together. One point of the star is intentionally faded, creating a subtle visual sense of upward growth. Anchoring it all is Belco’s new tagline, integrated directly into the logo: Opportunity For Every Ability.

To support Belco’s expanding programs, TrailBlaze developed a cohesive logo system, a clear master brand with aligned sub-brands, each sharing the Belco wordmark and star while carrying a unique color and service label. The result feels modern and dynamic, but still recognizably Belco.

Rather than launching everything at once, Belco chose a soft rollout, introducing the new brand internally and with key stakeholders first. By the time the brand appeared publicly, it already belonged to the people who would carry it forward. The refreshed identity made its public debut at the opening of Belco’s new document destruction facility, with TrailBlaze supporting the launch through event messaging and on-brand presence.

Today, Belco shows up as one cohesive organization with clarity, credibility, and heart. Messaging resonates with clients, families, donors, and community leaders. Leadership and the board share a common language and direction. Most importantly, the brand now matches the experience people have when they actually work with Belco. TrailBlaze remains a partner as Belco builds its new website and continues bringing the brand fully to life — a legacy organization, stepping boldly into its next chapter.
